Traumatic brain injuries can occur even in apparently minor accidents; a car collision involving speeds no more than 15 miles per hour can exert forces 10 times that of gravity on the skull and brain. If you have recently been in an accident, be alert for possible symptoms of brain injury.
Symptoms of Brain Injury
Depending on the extent of the damage and which area of the brain is involved, the brain injury symptoms may vary significantly. A person who has sustained a brain injury does not necessarily have intense pain, nor do they have to lose consciousness. The symptoms of brain injury tend to involve emotional, cognitive, social, and / or physical changes. If the injured person experiences any of the following symptoms, there is a strong possibility they have a brain injury:
Emotional Changes To Look For
- alteration in personality
- easily irritated, angered, or frustrated
- unexplained mood swings
- anxiety
- depression
- inflexibility
Cognitive Impairments That May Accompany Brain Injury
- inability to concentration
- inability to process information, reason, or solve problems
- mental fatigue
- short-term memory problems
- difficulty organizing thoughts or tasks
- lack of drive
Social Impairment
The area of social impairment may be the most challenging area for others to understand and accept. When the victim of a brain injury does not look injured, it is difficult for others to remember that the person is injured. Inappropriate behaviors can be very embarrassing and awkward to handle. The behaviors may include:
- impulsiveness / loss of inhibitions
- lack of self-control / poor judgment
- susceptible to addictive behaviors (drug or alcohol)
- difficulty establishing or maintaining relationships
- irresponsible at work or home
- sexual dysfunction
Physical Symptoms
- headache
- dizziness / loss of balance
- tinnitus (ringing or other sound in ears)
- changes in sensory abilities: vision changes, hearing loss, decreased sense of taste, decreased sense of smell
- sleep disorders: cannot get to sleep, cannot stay asleep, cannot wake up from sleep
- fatigue
- seizures
