Truck Driver Training – Driving Simulator – Drive Cam

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Truck driver training has made a technological leap into the 21st century. Technology, especially the driving simulator, is helping fleets to improve safety and performance by making it easier to train and monitor truck drivers. Many large, commercial fleets are adding tools such as computer-based training, driving simulators, and onboard video monitors to their driver education programs in an effort to deliver more and better training and performance feedback. The results are very encouraging.

In an effort to reduce semi truck accidents, “we’ve focused on brakes, we’ve focused on tires — all those things — but the Crash Causation Study shows us that we clearly need to focus on drivers and the issues surrounding them.” ~ Administrator Annette M. Sandberg, head of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

Why computer-based training is so effective:

  • Content can be quickly updated from a single source, so that training content is always current.
  • Audio and vibration systems are designed to add accurate driving noise and feel to the experience.
  • It can create all types of challenging driving situations, such as dark, rain, snow, fog, or ice. This will allow the driver to learn how to react in dangerous situations without crashing a truck or causing personal injury.
  • A closed-circuit television allows observers to watch the drivers from the operator console.
  • The simulator allows for taping the drivers so that they can see how they reacted and do a self-critique of their performance.
  • Online training is suited to introduction, refresher, or remedial training.

Why drive cam is so effective:

  • It provides routine performance feedback — clear information as to how well drivers are actually doing on the highways.
  • Global positioning satellites, engine data recorders, and collision avoidance systems provide glimpses into the world of the truck cab.
  • Risky behaviors (speeding, hard braking, poor shifting habits) are identified.
  • It encourages truck drivers to be more attentive to their driving skills, by making them accountable for their behaviors.

Using technology to help monitor driver performance and deliver more personalized training is enabling fleets to improve safety and reduce costs. These new tools will help the industry take the next important step — to reduce the number of crashes and crash-avoidance maneuvers. Ultimately this will save lives.

Semi Truck Accident Wrongful Death – Carver County – Hugo, MN

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

wrongful-death-2 Semi Truck Accident Wrongful Death - Carver County - Hugo, MNLast Thursday, in Hugo, a semi truck rear ended a minivan killing 2 of the 3 occupants. Carolyn Anderson, 59, stopped to make a left turn at 159th Street when her van was hit by the semi truck driven by Seth Strehler, 32, of Rockford, Minnesota. Carolyn died at the scene. Her 88-year-old aunt, Rose Bongiovanni, of St. Paul, was taken to Regions Hospital, where she later died. Minnesota State Patrol said that with all of the new development in the area cross traffic has increased. It is vital for drivers to be alert and slow down.

Saturday, in Carver County, a three-vehicle fatal accident took the lives of two people and injured four others, including 3 children. Two of the three drivers died in the chain reaction semi truck crash, Sandra Babatz, 45, of Norwood Young America, and Juan Overa, 35 of Sullivan, Texas.

Semi truck driver Gordon Curtiss, 52, of Hutchinson, was traveling east on Highway 212 in a 2007 Kenworth semi truck. Sandra Babatz was also going east driving a 2003 Pontiac Vibe. Highway 212 is just two lanes at that point, Babatz stopped on the highway to make a left turn off the highway, onto CR 51 going north. Babatz was rear ended by Curtiss and pushed into the other lane of traffic. She was broadsided by a 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Olvera.

Both of these accidents highlight the need for more attentiveness to driving, especially on two-lane highways. If either of these accidents happened because of negligence on the part of the semi truck driver, a trustee can be named by the courts and wrongful death claims can be filed.

Acts of negligence:

  • driver negligence which includes texting while driving, dialing cellphone, eating, driving while tired
  • equipment violations
  • negligent hiring which means a trucking company may have hired an unqualified driver
  • over hours

Wrongful Death

Wrongful death is when a person is killed as the result of a negligent act by another. In Minnesota, wrongful death claims are brought by a trustee. A trustee is court appointed, usually a family member who was close to the decedent. They are appointed to represent the interests of the heirs.

The heirs may be entitled to damages. Wrongful death damages may include compensation for:

  • loss of wages
  • loss of companionship
  • funeral and burial expenses
  • medical expenses

In some wrongful death cases, punitive damages may be recovered. To recover punitive damages one must prove that the negligent party acted with reckless disregard for the safety and rights of others.

You cannot take back a negligent, inattentive moment of driving. Life is forever changed for many people, many families, many communities. The ripple effect is extensive. This is the second fatal semi truck accident in Minnesota this weekend. Both accidents happened when vehicles were turning left and each time a semi truck crashed into them, killing the drivers instantly.

Minnesota Semi Truck Accidents

Commercial truck drivers are responsible for safely operating and maintaining their vehicles. They owe it to the public to use reasonable care when on the road. That includes knowing the laws and obeying them — putting safety above time constraints. One law that is being ignored is about texting while driving. It is against the law and negligent to do so.

If a truck driver is guilty of negligence, there is a greater possibility of a serious accident. A semi truck driver found to be negligent in an accident can be held legally liable for injuries and damages.

Other drivers need to use care when driving near a semi truck. Remember these guidelines:

  • Do not follow too closely. The semi truck driver cannot see you.
  • Do not drive in the semi truck’s no zones / blind spots.
  • Use caution when passing a semi truck.

Semi Truck Hits Minivan Killing Two in Hugo MN

Friday, August 28th, 2009

semi-truck-2 Semi Truck Hits Minivan Killing Two in Hugo MNTragedy struck again in Hugo on Thursday. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, 59-year-old Carolyn Anderson was stopped on Hwy 61, near Hugo, waiting to turn left, when she was rear-ended by a semi truck. Ms. Anderson died at the scene and an 88-year-old passenger, Rose Bongiovanni, died after being taken to Regions Hospital. A third person in the minivan, Marlene Wanner, 72, is in critical condition at Regions Hospital.

Hwy 61 was closed, in both directions, for three hours. The impact pushed the van into the ditch and the semi truck was angled across the highway. It is still too early to tell if the accident was driver negligence, mechanical malfunction, or speed-related.

The 32-year-old semi truck driver was not injured. He had a clean driving record. The accident is under investigation and charges may be filed.

About Semi Truck Accidents

There are many factors that contribute to semi truck accidents, including driver fatigue, speed, excessive freight, and now all too often truck drivers are texting and driving. Truck drivers are not able to maneuver as quickly or stop as quickly as smaller vehicles, which can contribute to many semi truck accidents.

Under Minnesota law, a semi truck accident is different than a car accident. Truck drivers and the companies they drive for have strict state and federal regulations they must follow. They are required to keep log books, time sheets, truck maintenance records, and inspection records. These records are checked in every semi truck accident and may be crucial to a claim based on the driver’s lack of alertness or fatigue problems.

Additional factors that impact a accident claim involving semi trucks:

  • Trucking companies are required to perform background checks prior to hiring drivers.
  • Trucking companies are required to do periodic evaluations on their truck drivers to ascertain that their skills and abilities meet state standards.
  • Truck drivers are limited on the number of hours that they can drive in a 24-hour period and during a 7-day period.
  • Truck drivers are tested regularly, and randomly, for drugs and alcohol.
  • Laws require semi trucks to carry higher amounts of insurance coverage.

In a semi truck accident, any violation of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation Act adds weight to the case, providing the basis for establishing fault and proving liability on the part of the truck driver and the trucking company.
