During the lazy days of summer, the number of dog bites increases as kids and dogs play and romp outside — many times unsupervised. We encourage all dog owners to be vigilant about dog bite prevention.
Here are a few questions for you to answer to determine the probability that your dog will bite:
- Is your dog trained and socialized? Dogs that are not taught proper social skills are more likely to bite.
- Is your dog scared and fearful? Anxious, fearful dogs may bite as a defensive action.
- Is your dog easily annoyed? A dog with lower tolerance is more apt to bite.
- Is your dog spayed or neutered? A dog who has not been spayed or neutered may exhibit more aggressive behavior.
- Are you an alert, observant dog owner? It is important to keep your dog away from others if it becomes too excited, too tired, is eating, or is tending to puppies. Never leave your dog alone with young children.
As a dog owner it is important to remember that no dog is 100% safe in every situation. Ultimately, owners are responsible for how safe their dog is.
