Shaken baby syndrome, also called abusive head trauma or AHT, is a relatively recent discovery in the field of infant health. It was first described in 1974, and many aspects of this syndrome are still being studied today.
Causes and Consequences of Shaken Baby Syndrome
Infants, especially newborns, have soft skulls and underdeveloped neck muscles. This makes them particularly vulnerable to brain damage if they are dropped, shaken, or hit. While the most severe cases of AHT are generally linked to abuse, this is not always the case. AHT, or an injury with similar symptoms, can be caused by a one-time accident.
The immediate symptoms of shaken baby syndrome include unequal or dilated pupils, rigid muscles, breathing difficulties, and vocalization difficulties. The long-term health effects can include:
- Physical impairments
- Blindness
- Mental retardation
- Seizure disorders
- Coma or death
The negligent or abusive treatment of a child can be cause for civil action. To learn more, speak with one of our experienced Minnesota Shaken Baby Syndrome Lawyer.
