Pacemakers
A Pacemaker is a relatively small device that doctor’s place under the skin of your chest or abdomen to help regulate abnormal heart rhythms. It uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate. When the heart rhythm is abnormal it is referred to as arrhythmia. As the pacemaker prompts the heart to beat normally, it relieves some symptoms related to arrhythmia such as:
- fatigue
- fainting
What Pacemakers do:
- Slow down or speed up the heartbeat
- Make sure the ventricles contract normally
- Help deter an abnormal, fast rhythm
- Regulate the electrical signal between the upper and lower chambers of the heart
- Regulate the electrical signals between the ventricles
- Monitor and record electrical activity of the heart
- Monitor blood temperature and breathing rate (newer models of pacemakers)
Medtronic Warns of Defect
According to the Associated Press, on May 19, 2009, Medtronic Incorporated has warned doctors that 37,000 of their Kappa and Sigma pacemakers may have wiring defects. These defects can cause them to malfunction, placing the patient’s life in danger. Medtronics stated further that they have two reports of patient deaths that can possibly be linked to a malfunctioning pacemaker. Patients with pacemakers have been instructed to contact their doctor immediately if they experience fainting or lightheadedness.
Medtronics Recall?
Approximately 1.7 million Kappa and Sigma pacemakers have been implanted in patients since 1997. Will the recent findings warrant a recall? Medtronics is recommending that doctors should consider replacing the pacemaker if it is vital for daily survival.
